The Best Cardio Machines Ranked for Fat Burning

Not all cardio machines are created equal. We rank the most common gym cardio machines by calorie burn, muscle engagement, and effectiveness for fat loss in Australia.

Different cardio machines produce vastly different results for the same time investment. Understanding the trade-offs between machines helps you choose the right tool for your goals, available time, and physical limitations.

At the top of the ranking for calorie burn and muscle engagement is the rowing machine, which recruits 86% of the body's muscles and burns 600-800 calories per hour at moderate-to-high intensity. Second is the assault (air) bike, which becomes brutally difficult at high output and burns even more calories than rowing in HIIT format. Third is the ski erg, engaging the entire upper body and core while also taxing the cardiovascular system heavily. These three machines are under-utilised in most Australian gyms.

The treadmill ranks highly because running is natural and effective - jogging burns 400-600 calories per hour, sprinting considerably more. The stairmaster/stair climber builds glutes and legs while providing excellent cardio. The elliptical and stationary bike are the lowest-calorie-burn options per unit time but are valuable for those with joint issues or lower body injuries who need low-impact options. Whatever machine you choose, the most effective one is the machine you'll actually use consistently. Choose based on enjoyment and sustainability first, then optimise for calorie burn as secondary criteria.
